La Iniciativa para la Humanización de la Asistencia al Nacimiento y la Lactancia (IHAN) fue lanzada por la OMS y UNICEF en 1992 para animar a los hospitales, servicios de salud, y en particular las salas de maternidad a adoptar las prácticas que protejan, promuevan y apoyen la lactancia materna exclusiva desde el nacimiento. Los objetivos de la IHAN son: (1) Permitir a las madres una elección informada de cómo alimentar a sus recién nacidos. (2) Apoyar el inicio precoz de la lactancia materna. (3) Promover la lactancia materna exclusiva los primeros seis meses. (4) Asegurar el cese de donaciones o ventas a bajo coste de leches adaptadas a los hospitales. (5) Añadir otros aspectos de atención a la madre y al niño en posteriores estadios. Para contribuir a la implementación de sus objetivos la IHAN organiza bianualmente un Congreso de Lactancia, que en 2011 se ha celebrado en Avila. Eulàlia Torras, presidenta de ALBA, ha participado en este congreso además de moderar un seminario.
